Bradford Factor β Overview
A statistic called the Bradford Factor assesses personnel absence patterns. The Bradford Factor is calculated as follows:
B = SΒ² x D
where:
B is the Bradford Factor score
S is the total number of spells (instances) of absence of an individual over a set period
D is the total number of days of absence of that individual over the same set period
Improvements have been made in the Human Resources module so that it is now easier to set up, view, and report on Bradford Factors for HR personnel. These include a new Bradford Factor Configuration page for setup, and a new Bradford Factor Report that reports on these statistics.
Bradford Factor Calculation: Bradford Factor Configuration
A Bradford Factor Configuration page is found under the Human Resources > HR Maintenance menu, as shown in Bradford Factor Configuration Screen. It allows you to predefine an ordered list of time intervals to be used for Bradford Factor calculation, which are displayed in the HR Personnel Workbench.

Setting Up Start/End Dates
The Start and End Dates set up in Configuration can simply be specific dates, or they can be expressions that evaluate to dates. These expressions can consist of adding/subtracting days, weeks, months, or years to/from a date. You can convert dates to Financial Periods, add/subtract Financial Periods on the result, and finally convert back to a date for the start or end of the Financial Period or Financial Year. Any combination of these is permitted as long as the final result is a valid date.
The summary of the syntax given below directs you on how to set up these dates correctly.
Syntax | Description |
A specific date, for example 01/01/2017 | The date should be in the format defined for the current company (such as DD/MM/YYYY for a UK company and MM/DD/YYYY for a US company). It is actually stored in the database as a numerical equivalent so it can be displayed and work correctly regardless of which company you are in. |
TODAY | Today's date |
nD | n days, where n is an integer |
nW | n weeks, where n is an integer |
nM | n months, where n is an integer |
nY | n years, where n is an integer |
Bradford Factor Calculation: Personnel Workbench
This section describes how the HR Personnel Workbench is set up to use Bradford Factor calculations.
Bradford Factors Layout
A Bradford Factors layout is found on the Other tab of the Personnel Workbench, as shown in Bradford Factors Layout. It displays only if Bradford Factor values have been set up in Bradford Factor Configuration.

Column Sets
The configured Bradford Factors also appear on the list of available Column Set fields, as shown in Column Set with Bradford Factors. This ensures that they can be included on an initial browse screen view, if desired.

Bradford Factor Calculation: Bradford Factors Report
The Bradford Factors Report allows you to report on personnel with Bradford Factor values in a selected range.
Menu Option
The new Bradford Factors report (Report Menu Option) only appears on the Human Resources > Reports > Personnel Statistics menu if some Bradford Factors have already been set up.
Report Menu Option
Report Selection Screen
When you select Bradford Factors from the menu (see Report Menu Option), a selection screen appears, as shown in Report Selection Screen. This screen contains From/To fields for each of the configured Bradford Factors.
If both the From and To values for a given Bradford Factor equal zero (0), that zero value is not included on the report.
