COINS uses two HMRC authorisation tokens to submit VAT returns through Making Tax Digital (MTD) — one for viewing information and one for submission. You need these tokens when setting up MTD for the first time, or when re-authorising after a token has expired.
📌Note: If multiple users are suddenly unable to submit VAT returns and no configuration changes have been made, your HMRC tokens may have expired. Complete steps 3 and 4 below to restore submission access immediately.
Set parameter MTDURL = https://api.service.hmrc.gov.uk
In VAT Registrations tick Make Tax Digital and save
Select Authorise Viewing Information in your VAT Registration to grant HMRC access for viewing.
Select Authorise Submission in your VAT Registration to grant HMRC permission to receive your returns.
📌Note: The Client Id, Client Secret and Server token will be populated automatically during the registration process.
Save the registration
Complete the authorisation flow
Select 'Authorise Viewing Information'
Copy the authorisation code and then paste it into Coins
Repeat the process for the Viewing Token
